The International Marathon event series on inline skates had their start in the 90’s. At the beginning of the 1999 season common rules and a unified classification system was introduced.

The initial series were organized by the CERS (European Confederation of Roller Sports) where the events were called CERS Playlife Grand Prix,. In 2001 and 2002 F.I.R.S. too over control of the events which were renamed as the FIRS/CIC Roller World Cup. During these years successful events were held in a number of cities including Paris, Eindhoven, Duluth,Zurich, Engadin, Rome, Naples, and Pamploma.

In 2003, the experienced company Swiss Iguana Think Tank AG was given the rights of organizing the events on a Worldwide basis which was renamed as the FIRS/CIC World Inline Cup. The cities of Seoul, Incheon, Taipei, Munich, Mainz and Suzhou were added to the calendar making the event a true WORLDWIDE series.
